Victorian Local government election Campaign

Election day - 22nd October 2016
Why Local Government?
It is clear that our State and National governments are failing to act to restore a safe climate. This leaves a third tier of government we can work in.

Philip Sutton, climate strategist and Save the Planet candidate, originally identified local government as playing a potential key role in implementing a climate emergency response through developing climate emergency plans and community campaigns at local council level.

Through the work of Paul Cuttler, Tiffany Harrison and others, Save the Planet has adapted the work from Philip's original plan and will be seeking to implement climate emergency plans a local government level by getting candidates elected to council.

What role can local government play in stopping global warming?
1. Leading by example ensuring council operations are zero emission
2. Encouraging people lving and working in the council to adopt a zero emission life style, including financial support and incentives for renewable energy production and energy efficiency measures.
3. Build zero or negative emission micro grids to power the local community
4. Build community resilience against future global warming including mitigating flood and wild fire risks
5. Build local food production and distribution
6. Build excellent walking and cycling infrastructure
7. Encourage the use of electric vehicles
8. Lobby for increased electrified rail transport
9. Turn organic waste into stable bio-char and help remove excess emissions from the atmosphere
10. Planting of shade trees to reduce heat island effects and impacts of future heat including deaths
