What is the cost of running candidates?
In a deliberate attempt to reduce the number of independent and small party candidates, in 2013 the federal Labor government doubled the cost of running in a federal election from $500 to $1000 for the lower house and from $1000 to $2000 for the senate, making it difficult for the average person to run for federal parliament unless they have the financial backing of big business or unions. This increase of course doesn't affect large parties as they will get more than 4% and thus get this money back, along with massive amounts of electoral funding.
If Save the Planet registered as a party, candidate registration costs would drop dramatically.
The additional cost of printing for pre-election leafletting and how to vote cards typically runs around $500 per candidate.
